Chapter Nine
Jason listened to Kyleâs voice. To the gentle nonsense, he was speaking to his horse.
Within the tent it was half-dark, inside his head it was utterly black.
It happened; that sick oiliness that slimed its way into all the parts of him. First, he stopped smiling, then his head ached, then he had the weight of everything pushing him down, and all he needed, finally, was to be alone.
Jason didnât know why it happened. The charity doctor heâd seen said it was something Jason would have to live with, an imbalance in his hormones or some such shit. Of course, the doctor didnât know that Jason sold his body to survive, didnât know that for one week out of every six or so, he was on the streets, sleeping on benches or in doorways. He didnât know because Jason didnât tell him.
Jason had some meds, one daily, a low dose of something or other that Steve paid for, and he also had Valium for the times when the blackness was too much. Like tonight.
But the pills made him sleep, and sleep too deeply, and that was when the nightmares happened.
So tonight, Jason wasnât going to take them. And the blackness remained.
Kyleâs voice was calm, soft and reassuring, and Jason almost wished he were a horse just so Kyle could gentle him and dismiss the blackness. When the words stopped, and the stable was near silent, Jasonâs watch showed it was after eleven. He cautiously unzipped the tent.
He needed to be alone, but being in a small space wasnât his first option.
Carefully and quietly he moved across the stable and out into the night, shrugging his jacket around him, to ward off the chill. He stood at the rails of the exercise yard and concentrated on his breathing, staring out into the darkness and then up to the stars in the wide sky above.
âThereâs food inside,â Kyle said from his left.
Jason didnât even jump; somehow heâd assumed that Kyle was going to find him. Day two and he had already come to realize that Kyle was good at creeping around and getting up in his face.
âThanks.â He didnât add that he wasnât hungry because that would then become the opening for more conversation.
âThat happen often?â Kyle asked.
Great. He wants to talk.
âWhat?â Jason clambered up and sat on the top rail. This time, he was steadier, more balanced, but Kyle still stepped closer as if to stop him falling. Damn man didnât know when to quit with his worrying.
âI saw your face. You went⦠wrong.â
âWrong.â
âLike you recalled something, and it was too much, and so you shut down.â
âIt happens,â was all he was going to say.
Kyle stepped even closer and now Jason could read the concern on his face. âIf you need to talk, then I can get Liam out here, or Robbie.â
âOr Jack?â Jason asked.
Kyle frowned. âOr Jack. Is that who you need to talk to?â
Jason huffed a laugh, the depth of his self-loathing drifting into his next words. âBig rich man only needs someone like me for one thing.
